Chapter 14

Cassandra

Instead of taking the vehicle we arrived in, Ace invited me to ride on the back of his bike with a gleam in his eye. With the excitement of maybe finding his brother hanging in the air between us, I took a chance. Riding a motorcycle was not something I ever thought I’d be interested in doing. Maybe Mia’s words about me being a mousy brunette that had never allowed myself to really live was preying on the back of my mind as well. This was my chance to live.

I glanced up at Ace through my lashes as he tenderly strapped a helmet onto my head. I realized I was chewing on my lip when he spoke.

“You look worried. Are you sure you’re okay riding behind me?”

His words took me by surprise. “You avoided the more common term because you thought I’d be offended, didn’t you?”

He gave me a lopsided smile. “It seems kind of rude to call it a bitch seat. You’re not used to crass MC terminology. I wouldn’t want you to infer that I’m calling you my bitch for putting you in the seat.”

Something dark and dirty twisted in my stomach when he used that word. It was arousal. Good grief, getting turned on by that word coming out of his mouth was beyond disgusting. Shame made my face flush with embarrassment. I didn’t enjoy being called a bitch, but something about his rough voice saying forbidden things flipped all the right switches for me. I glanced away as he finished buckling the helmet, trying to get my head around this new piece of information I just learned about myself.

Suddenly, his hand came up underneath my chin and he tilted my face up to look into my eyes. Of course he noticed that something was off. This man didn’t miss much that went on around him.

“What just happened there?” His demanding voice sent that feeling in my gut spiraling again.

I shoved his hand away. “Nothing. I’m fine,” I lied.

“Does my motorcycle scare you?” he asked somberly.

I shook my head and pushed my hands between my legs to balance myself while I adjusted my position. “At the hospital, we call them donorcycles for obvious reasons.”

“Yeah, some idiots don’t wear helmets and allow themselves to be distracted by stupid shit when they should be paying attention to the road.” Easing back, he said, “There’s no foul weather tonight and there ain’t no fucker more serious than me about safety. I promise that when you’re with me, you’re safe.”

I stopped chewing on my lip and shoved my glasses back onto my nose. “I trust you.” Holding up two fingers, I added, “Scouts honor. I wouldn’t lie about something like that.”

He wound a lock of my hair around his finger and let it slowly loose. “You’re so damned cute that you could be a serious distraction on the road if you wanted to be.”

I leaned forward slightly and responded, “I won’t be, though, because I want us to make it to your cabin in one piece.
